What Defines a Fire-Rated Door?

Fire-rated doors are vital safety components in UK buildings. Their design allows them to resist fire and smoke for a set duration (for example, 30, 60 or 90 minutes). This gives people more time to escape safely and helps contain fires within certain areas.

Regulatory Standards & Certification

In the UK, there are strict rules governing the manufacture and fitting of fire-resistant doors. A key benchmark is BS-EN 1634-1, which sets out how door and shutter assemblies must perform under fire and smoke conditions. Products are tested in lab settings to ensure they meet criteria for keeping out fire and smoke.

In addition, certification through UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) provides assurance that a fire-rated door has passed all necessary assessments — regarding materials, construction, manufacturing, and performance.

Key Features & Why They’re Important

  • Materials & Construction: Fire-rated doors can be made from suited materials such as steel, fire-resistant timber or special glazing. They also include seals that expand when heated to block gaps where fire or smoke might spread.
  • Self-Closing Mechanisms: Many include automatic closers so doors shut by themselves during a fire. This helps maintain fire zones inside a building.
  • Function in evacuation & containment: Besides forming a barrier, these doors play a big role in allowing occupants a safer exit and in limiting fire damage. They’re typically placed in higher-risk locations — such as kitchens, boiler or plant rooms, and areas with electrical installations.

If you need help assessing or testing fire-rated doors for your site (for example evaluating existing doorsets), there are expert services available to guide you through the testing and regulatory compliance process.

If required, CFR may be able to help with the materials and specimen installation. Please ask for details.
